Pumpkin Season

Temps in the 80s are a thing of the past — until next year — and the city is ready for one of its favorite seasons. Some call it “pumpkin season,” while others rejoice in “sweater weather,” but with crisp, cool air swirling up the avenues, it’s indubitably fall in New York City. The break in the heat mixed with the excitement of fall festivities means that residents are ready to paint the town, well, orange, of course. Grab a cup of hot cocoa and watch the leaves change from verdant green to a riot of autumnal hues around the city and across the Hudson from the vantage point of your well-appointed home at the 555TEN luxury rentals. Break out the Le Creuset and cook yourself a savory cold-weather coq au vin. Or, have a glass of red wine in the luxe kitchen of your Midtown West apartment and head out to experience the season’s best offerings.

Here’s a list of our fall faves:

Kahve | 667 10th Avenue

What goes better with a chunky knit sweater than pumpkin-spiced anything? Yes, we know we’ve hit Peak Pumpkin Spice, but there’s nothing like indulging in a warm mug of the best chai tea you’ve ever tasted, tingling your palate with notes of cinnamon and ginger. And there’s no better place to get your PS fix than Hell’s Kitchen’s foremost coffee lounge — Kahve. Just a short walk from 555TEN, this has been the destination for coffee connoisseurs and tea devotees since 2011. A sleek, modern space, it’s the perfect spot to meet with friends, people watch, or grab a chai to-go before you take a refreshing morning walk down the Hudson.

Ghost Tour of Hell’s Kitchen | Ghosts, Murders, and Mayhem Walking Tours

Hell’s Kitchen might be the must-live-in location of the moment, but it has some skeletons in its closet — or should we say, ghosts. With old-time taverns and landmarks of yesteryear, the neighborhood has a storied past, and some of those stories are a little spooky. Take advantage of this time of year and stroll along with a lantern-lit walking ghost tour of the neighborhood. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, it’s an excellent opportunity to learn about the history of your area — even if that history includes the “Gangland Killings” and four haunted sites.

Halloween Pumpkin Flotilla | Harlem Meer | Oct. 28

There’s a local legend that Washington Irving, author of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” lived downtown around Union Square. While this myth may be as headless as the horseman he wrote about, it’s undeniable that Irving popularized jack-o’-lanterns as the preeminent symbol of the Halloween season. Experience these specters of the season in a fun and cinematic way. On Oct. 28 at the Harlem Meer, watch a fleet of illuminated pumpkins take to the water for a crepuscular cruise across the pond. Make the event special for your whole family by carving up one of the orange gourds yourself and entering it to be a part of the flotilla. Watching these homemade works of art glide across the water is nothing short of spectacular.

NYC Village Halloween Parade | Oct. 31

Outside of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Halloween Parade is one of NYC’s most prominent fall affairs. Take a quick cab downtown and prepare to be shocked, not from fear but in amazement of people’s creativity. This year’s theme is “I Am a Robot,” so expect a lot of riffs on androids. But if the past is prologue, you’ll see all of the ghouls, goblins, and witches one would expect from the country’s biggest Halloween celebration. Trick or treat in any way you see fit and join the parade — as long as you’re in costume.

Bike Around the City

Everyone knows that New Yorkers are always on the move. And there are plenty of ways to get around the city, from riding the subway to gliding the ferries. But one way to travel is growing in popularity thanks to its convenience and enjoyability. If you want to get from your Midtown West apartment to your meeting Downtown quickly — and completely stress free — cycling is the best way to go. Residents of the 555TEN luxury rentals will find it easier than ever to explore the city on two wheels. Not only do these no-fee rentals provide access to in-house amenities that would please any cyclist, they’re also located in close proximity to some of the best bike trails, shops, and rentals in the city.

Whether you favor a casual weekend ride or find yourself using your bike every day, 555TEN has you covered. There is storage for your ride and a full-service bike station to tend to your beloved two-wheeler’s needs, so you’ll never find yourself dealing with a flat tire right before your epic ride up the Hudson. With several dedicated bike lanes in Hell’s Kitchen, it’s hard to find a reason not to take your bike to that brunch date.

However, some days call for a longer ride. The Hudson River Greenway features 11 miles of beautiful, well-kept trails. Riding along the river in the fall is the best way to take in the changing leaves, as well as some of the city’s most memorable sights, including Riverside Park and the historic Little Red Lighthouse. This dedicated bike-only “highway” stretches from The Battery up to the George Washington Bridge. But riders wanting to cover even greater distances will eventually find themselves able to access upstate New York on the Empire State Trail, and the coastline by following parts of the East Coast Greenway.

But you don’t have to travel upstate for an epic bike ride. Central Park has three long-distance routes to explore, ranging from six miles and up. With carefree weekends, holidays, and select hours during the week, riders can set their own pace for exploring the many sights of this incredible park, including Belvedere Castle, the Harlem Meer, and Strawberry Fields. Just make sure you keep your late-night riding to a minimum, as the park is closed from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m.

All that riding can be hard on a bike, but if you find yourself in need of a replacement, or just a new basket and bell, you can pedal over to Danny’s Cycles or Enoch’s Bikes, both on 10th Avenue, just blocks from 555TEN. Both shops are great for renting or repairs, or for purchasing a new cycle. But if you’re feeling a bit less committed, there are five Citi Bike stations just blocks away from your luxury rental. Whether you’ve been training for the Tour de France or simply nurturing biking aspirations since that time you got stuck on the subway for two hours while commuting to the East Side, 555TEN is the perfect home for those chasing their two-wheeled dreams. There has never been a better time (or place) for cyclists.

A Night In

A night out on the town in New York City presents an array of options. There’s the seemingly endless labyrinth of restaurants, cafes, pubs, theaters, concert halls, and museums, all waiting to be explored. And yet, there are times when even the most seasoned New Yorker prefers to lay low. Luckily for residents of the Midtown West apartments at 555TEN, a night in doesn’t necessarily require hours of labor in the kitchen and/or dropping off on the couch (although we can appreciate the appeal of both those options)! With the indoor bowling alley and arcade open to residents of the 555TEN luxury rentals, along with the selection of top-notch takeout in proximity, a night in can be convenient.

The arrival of Fall often brings with it a new set of culinary cravings; namely, the desire for something fresh, colorful, and maybe even a little spicy. For food that hits these marks and more, look no further than Añejo. Offering a pioneering, inventive take on familiar Mexican standbys, Añejo is a failsafe cure for your south-of-the-border hankerings. What makes it an excellent option for takeout is the huge selection of small plates, many of them creative and high-end. Take, for example, the Blistered Shishito Peppers, which are served with chipotle sofrito, chorizo, lime aioli, and corn tortillas. Or, the Duck Carnitas Enchiladas, smothered in chocolate mole and topped with shaved lettuce and cotija cheese. Order a few dishes, and you’ll have the perfect smorgasbord for sharing with friends back at 555TEN. And what should one imbibe during a journey through this menu? Why, tequila of course, preferably in the form of a classic margarita.

If you’d rather forgo a gastronomical adventure in favor of something tried-and-true, then, by all means, order a pizza. There’s a reason it’s the go-to meal when it comes to ordering in. And yet, pizza in New York is omnipresent, so finding the right pizza can prove an onerous task. This is where Capizzi comes in. Owner Joseph Calcagno grew up working in the kitchen alongside his Italian-born father and grandparents in their Brooklyn pizza shops, lending him experience that you can taste in his pies. They’re loaded with fresh, high-quality ingredients, but they’re also arrestingly simple. There’s nothing wacky afoot here, and, in fact, we’d recommend the Pizza del Nonno, an homage to the owner’s grandfather. It’s topped with crushed San Marzano tomatoes, fresh pecorino Romano, Reggiano Parmigiano, and a drizzle of olive oil—a winning combination that we’re sure is worthy of its namesake. Pair it with a sangiovese, and you might as well be in Italy.

Finally, you can’t go wrong with takeout from Pio Pio 8. This Peruvian restaurant, which has locations throughout the boroughs, is known mainly for its succulent rotisserie chicken, which is “marinated for twelve hours in a mixture of cumin, garlic, Peruvian beer, and a few other key ingredients the owners prefer to keep a trade secret,” according to New York Magazine. Whatever these secret ingredients are, together they transform an ordinary rotisserie chicken into something transcendent. It’s no wonder Pio Pio 8 has gained such a following. Try their most popular item, the Matador Combo. It comes with the aforementioned rotisserie chicken, yellow rice, red beans, tostones, salchipapa, and an avocado salad—plenty to share. Pair it with sangria, garnished generously with oranges.

Whichever you choose, you’ll have plenty of time to head (not far) out to play some games inside the entertainment wonderland at 555TEN.

Midtown West Luxury Rentals Neighborhood

The High Line

One of the most beloved spots for tourists and NYC natives alike is the High Line. Living in a 555TEN luxury rental guarantees that you can enjoy this very green and very pleasant pathway every day! If you are as obsessed with the High Line as we are, you will want to check out some of the many greenway events offered there, including stargazing, historical tours, and even tai chi classes. Spend an hour or a day within its confines, and you’ll quickly discover the opportunities that await you just a short distance from 555TEN.

Even if you’ve already traipsed through the perennials or wandered beneath the substructure to inspect the trestles above, you’ll still marvel at what you can learn on the High Line Tour: From Freight To Flowers. While the last train cars full of frozen turkeys rolled across its elevated tracks in 1980, the knowledgeable docents who volunteer as High Line tour guides will take you back even further and deeper into a history that’s much more interesting than Thanksgiving gobblers. Their insider’s perspective on the park’s history, design, and landscape takes a unique park and presents it as a modern marvel of reclamation and conservation with information on its horticultural displays and, of course, its origins as a humble rail line. Find out how the park’s plants were selected for their hardiness or learn how water recycling is employed to prevent rainwater loss.

When day turns to night, the High Line is an excellent place to remember that there are lights above and beyond the twinklings of street lamps and high-rises. Yes, despite what you’ve heard, there is a nighttime sky to be seen above NYC, and the Stargazing events in the park give you the chance to get a very detailed look at it. Each Tuesday evening from April to October, park-goers are offered an opportunity for a romantic stroll through the High Line’s paths and also to take a peek at the worlds above. High-powered telescopes, courtesy of the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York, are brought in, and members of the club guide you on an exploration of the cosmos. On rainy days, make sure to check the High Line website or Twitter feed where they’ll announce any cancellations by 3 pm.

Of course, the High Line is more than just earthly and celestial tourism. It’s also a living, breathing space that hosts a lively variety of activities for all pursuits. On their calendar, you’ll find regular offerings of outdoor tai chi and meditation sessions, as well as talks and art exhibitions. A Walk Through Time by Kamau Ware is a commissioned work currently showcased on the High Line. Portraits and oral histories of seven New Yorkers, along with personal narratives telling the stories of their 7 o’clock routines, are shared in tandem with a walking tour through the park. The Agora Art Tour, guided by High Line Art Assistant Curator, Melanie Kress, is a unique exploration of the park’s many murals, sculptures, and other forms of public art. You also can take in a performance from the LIVE! Series, which features “dynamic live performances and participatory activities that provide a platform for visitors of all ages to experience the High Line through music and motion.” Dance parties, poetry readings, and other happenings in the LIVE! experience are a reflection of the vibrancy of New York art and culture — all of it delivered to your very doorstep.

A View from Above

Living in New York City is all about the views. And at the 555TEN luxury rentals, the views of Manhattan, including the Empire State Building, are unsurpassed. You’d be hard-pressed to find more striking vistas in all of NYC. But there’s one way you might to be able to get a better look—from a helicopter or plane gliding over the Manhattan skyline.

Blade, a startup that many have called the “Uber of helicopters,” is an aviation company that flies the city’s elite to or from airports around the city or on glamorous weekend getaways. That means it’s not just a service for high-powered business people to get back to work after taking that redeye; it’s a valuable aid for anyone who seeks the ultimate in luxury and ease without the hassle of long waits in traffic.

Booking one of their seaplanes or helicopters out of Manhattan for a trip to the Hamptons, let’s say, is just as easy as living in your Midtown West apartment. Residents of the luxury apartments for rent at 555TEN are accustomed to using the building’s app to make their life a little more comfortable, whether it’s having someone walk your dog or pick up a delivery. Blade’s app is just as easy; you can even book a last-minute seat the same day you want to travel.

After your flight is booked, head to one of Blade’s lounges—there’s one just a 15-minute walk from 555TEN on the Hudson River. This is where the first-class experience starts: check your bag, get a wristband, and head to the bar, where you can sip on rosé in Blade’s signature adult-beverage sippy cup that will ensure your wine doesn’t spill on takeoff or landing. With drink in hand, you’re ready to board. For this particular route, you can take a seaplane or a helicopter; either way, you’ll be treated to a one-of-a-kind perspective of the city that few people get a chance to see. Soaring above the river, you might even get a glimpse of your neighbors enjoying the rooftop pool at 555TEN.

Relax as you watch the traffic snarl and jam beneath you and be grateful you’re not stuck in a car. Thanks to Blade, the splendor of the Hamptons is just a few minutes away. Once you see the urban architecture of New York and the suburbs on Long Island fade into pastoral and beachside vistas, you’ll know you’ve arrived. Wasn’t that so much easier than taking the Hampton Jitney?

But Blade doesn’t only service the Hamptons; you can book jaunts to Nantucket, Sag Harbor, and the Jersey Shore, including Atlantic City. The company even offers charters to Miami and Palm Beach.

Whether you use the service regularly or purchase it as an unforgettable gift for a client or loved one, sometimes it is good to have your head in the clouds.

Now Nikki Bella Doesn’t Want Kids Until Her 40s

Twin wrestlers Brie and Nikki Bella recently posed for a shoot at 555TEN, the Midtown luxury apartments serving as the perfect backdrop for the famous duo. The athletes discussed motherhood, relationships, and their careers while posing beside 555TEN’s travertine-accented indoor saltwater pool, part of the building’s health and wellness floor, which also contains a state-of-the-art-fitness center, complete with cardio equipment, including Peloton bikes and the Nexersys Boxing Exergame. The pair also struck poses on the building’s 56th-story observation deck beside its rooftop pool, with the sights of the city reflected in the background.

Jonathan Adler’s Maximalist Model Apartment at 555TEN

Jonathan Adler, who has been called “the authority on Modern American glamour since 1993,” has a genius for juxtaposing elegance with a sense of play, a trait which is everywhere apparent in the model apartment he has designed for the luxury Midtown rentals at 555TEN. As the man who hung a sign in his shop that reads “minimalism is a bummer,” he has taken his talent for striking the fine balance of clean lines and eye-catching shapes and patterns and run with it. His use of the space in 555TEN’s apartment highlights the stunning views, the gracefully constructed layouts of these homes, and their exquisite features like double-paned window walls that minimize noise via state-of-the-art acoustic technology. And, as a way to start their own customization process and channel the creativity of a master of design like Adler, residents are invited to make their own mark on their apartments by choosing a dark or light “Extell Choice” finish. The “Sunrise” or “Sunset” shades will accent wooden floors throughout the homes, the millwork in the modern kitchens, and the vanities in the Porcelanosa-tiled bathrooms with Waterworks fixtures.

Here is a look inside the Jonathan Adler model, which uses all the innate beauty and refined touches of the 555TEN rental homes to great effect.

As soon as you walk in, the Globo Console in the entryway will be the perfect introduction to Adler’s aesthetic. With its sleek white lacquer cabinet top, brass legs, and blue cabochons, it suggests a Hollywood starlet’s vanity and a Kubrick spacecraft so graceful it will prepare you for liftoff into Adler’s stratosphere, where each object of the home is a friendly, useful work of art.

Down the hall, you will find the living room, anchored by the Baxter Sofa and punctuated by the Pompidou Chair, whose continuous back and arms are as comfortable to be enveloped in as they are satisfying to look at. The whole room combines plushness and a light color palette with gleaming accents that mimic the way sunlight reflects off the buildings that make up the lovely skyline view.

The dining room centerpiece is the Caracas Table, which features an hourglass-shaped antiqued brass base and a pristine circular top that is ideal for lavish dinner parties and for catching the light pouring in through the corner windows. The master bedroom, which focuses on neutral color tones and accents of green and pink, contains a Connery King Bed, whose headboard and footboard manage to create a modernist piece that is paradoxically reminiscent of the beds of kings. In a signature move, Adler has added to the room his Large Mongolian Lamb Bench, whose interaction of hard and soft echoes the other textural juxtapositions throughout the home, creating a feeling of total comfort, imagination, and luxury.

In the kids’ room, Adler charges full steam ahead with lots of options for sitting, sleeping, and playing. The Maxime Lounge Chair has such a low-slung, wide, and cushioned seat that it encourages the best kind of sprawling. The Moroccan Pouf becomes equal parts chair and toy. It’s an excellent addition to a residence where the furniture is meant to please the eye, pamper the body, and give life that unexpected twist that keeps things interesting, in the true spirit of the Hudson Yards rental apartments at 555TEN.

The Return of Summer on the Hudson

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! (No, not “that” time of year.) We’re talking summer, particularly summer in NYC when the Parks Department holds Summer on the Hudson: a celebration of art, culture, and physical fitness in Riverside Park. The 555TEN luxury rentals, just minutes from the waterfront, bring you close to the Hudson’s concerts, dance performances, yoga classes, cardio sessions, and much more. Keep your mind and body moving from now until October with something for everyone just around the way from 555TEN’s Midtown West apartments.

Warm-weather wandering is always better when you’re feeling fit and ready to move and groove. Name your fave, and Summer on the Hudson probably provides it. Do you regularly perform a sun salutation followed by a downward facing dog? Stretch it all out with Yoga Flow after work, when veteran Nina Semczuk leads you on your yoga journey to more strength, greater flexibility, increased balance, and focus—all in the great outdoors. Never had a knack for those poses? Don’t fret. Pilates in the Park has you covered in your quest for a stronger core, body alignment, and, above all else, more energy. Of course, if you’re simply looking to lose a few pounds and get your heart pumping, Butt and Gut with veteran Donald Calliste will do both AND provide you with more tone and definition. Fitness fans, rejoice: Summer on the Hudson is here to help. Whatever your routine, switch it up on occasion with any number of dance classes or even some tai chi.

Summer on the Hudson also provides cinephiles and music lovers endless opportunities to indulge in new works and old favorites. Pack a blanket and some snacks and head to the Pier 1 Picture Show for an evening screening of Summer Wars, WALL-E, or Up. Grab a set of headphones and “quietly club” with the rowdiest no-noise event ever at the Silent Disco. This unique all-ages spectacular features live DJs spinning tunes while party-goers dance the night away in seemingly silent splendor. Or bring your friends and be the main attraction as you sing it loud and sing it proud at #TotallyPublicKaraoke. Don’t miss the Sweet Spot Festival featuring summer soundtracks of reggae, soulful house, disco, and Afro-beat music—all spun by a variety of “North America’s most-renowned sound architects.” If you love a sunset (and don’t we all?), make a play for Amplified Sundays with its live, infinitely danceable music playing through until day turns to night.

If you’ve got kids, then you won’t want to miss the numerous activities that Summer on the Hudson has planned for both the young and the young at heart. Learn a little something together about the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater’s efforts to restore the harbor. Missed the last eclipse? Then come out on a Sunday when the Amateur Astronomers Association brings out their solar telescopes. These special instruments are designed to allow for safe sungazing and sunspot spotting in the full light of the summer sky. Not sure what you’d like to do? Attend a Game Day for giant tic tac toe, lawn bowling, hopscotch, and jump rope. Play Dates and Super Soccer Stars give those under the age of five the activity that they need and crave and a matched dose of focused time that moms and dads will love.

Top 10 Coolest Rooftop Pools in NYC

The Midtown rentals at 555TEN are home to one of the city’s most eye-catching amenities: a rooftop pool located 56 stories above street level. The Extell-developed luxury tower is capped by not only the expansive swimming pool, but a rooftop deck outfitted with a lounge, bar, indoor/outdoor fireplace, private cabanas, and stunning views of the Hudson River. The rooftop pool isn’t residents’ only chance to take a dip, however: when the weather gets cooler, they can relax in the building’s indoor saltwater lap pool.

Picture-Perfect Summer

Just steps from the 555TEN luxury rentals, the Hudson River is a destination with an atmosphere all its own. Its natural beauty and cultural opportunity will become the anchor for your Instagram-ready summer days and nights living in these Midtown West apartments.

Start your ideal summer morning by spreading a towel beach-style on the grass in Hudson River Park. No need for traffic-congested trips to the beach when you and your friends can relax and have an Instagram-worthy picnic of lattes, avocado toasts, and yogurt parfaits that you can pick up from Think Coffee on your way to the river from 555TEN. If the lapping of the water calls to the sailor in you, you can take the New York City Sunset Sail, where, with a drink in hand from their full bar, you can watch the sun go down over the harbor. The dramatic look of the boat’s sail against the glittering skyline provides the chance for a picture you—and your followers—won’t want to miss.

Residents of 555TEN can walk on and off a New York Water Taxi, conveniently located at Pier 83, and use the water as a means of getting around town in a way that will be just as gratifying and fun as your ultimate destination, and even more camera-ready. For a classic tour, the boats from Circle Line Cruises also depart from Pier 83. Try the Complete Manhattan Cruise when out-of-town friends come to visit and want to pose in front of every angle of the island in one night.

For a fine-dining experience on board another beautiful ship, Hudson’s at Pier 81 is the right place to get photos of friends enjoying luscious food and views. Or you can take a ride with the North River Lobster Company on “New York’s only floating lobster shack,” a phenomenon, complete with lobster rolls and “froze,” that has to be splashed in all of its quaint glory all over your Instagram account to be believed—and envied.

Further inland, the river is still your playground (and background) when you go for drinks at Cantina Rooftop, where you can drink tequila and eat tacos for Happy Hour and come back later in the night for live music. Perhaps best of all are the river views that punctuate your days and nights at 555TEN itself, where you can luxuriate in an evening swim plus a glass of wine and capture the perfect pictures of your summer life on 555TEN’s rooftop, with the river glittering in the distance.
