Celebrate Oktoberfest
October 2022
Oktoberfest is not just a German celebration of—and with—beer but a state of mind that erupts every fall in certain corners of New York City. Luckily for residents of 555TEN, Midtown West is one of the hot spots where the uncannily perfect combination of beer and autumn weather can be yours all month long at these standout local bars, all of which feature some of the most sought-after craft beers in the city.
Beer Culture is just what its name says—a place where drinking beer is so much more than an act of refreshment. It’s a world unto itself (with a menu of October activities). This month, for example, the brewer of Westmalle Dubbel is making a visit to meet and greet people at the bar. For more of that European flavor, you’ll find Duvel, a classic strong beer from Belgium, and Brussels Calling, which features notes of malt, citrus, and spice.
Beer Authority, just steps from Times Square, has the perfect setup for a true Oktoberfest celebration in New York, thanks to its three floors of space in which to toast your pints and relax with friends for a beer and a bite after work and a rooftop space where you can while away the weekend hours with a pint or two and a full menu. Pair a Brauerei Reissdorf Kölsch with a NY Strip Steak or a platter of sliders for the table, and you’ll be ready for more rounds well into the evening.
As Is NYC is featured both on the Infatuation and Time Out New York’s lists of best beer bars in the city, and it’s easy to see why. As the Infatuation has it, “If you spend time in Hell’s Kitchen or the Theater District, it’s important that you know about As Is. It’s a busy spot with hardwood floors and potted plants, and it’s perfect for a first date, a drink before a show, or a meeting with your local run club (which is something we’ve definitely witnessed here).” It turns out the bar does, in fact, have its own run club, with beer- and food-filled celebrations at the finish line, which could be an interesting twist on Oktoberfest (or on your work/play balance all year long). But for a truly luxurious Oktoberfest beer tasting with a real New York edge, come to this elegant spot for a Swords and Gourds Pumpkin Ale with some roasted Brussels sprouts with bacon, and the spirit of the season will be coursing through you in no time.
With its wood paneling and old-school light fixtures, Midtown’s District Tap House offers an Oktoberfest experience as a midcentury New York tycoon might have designed it, with a plentiful food menu and beers like the Schöfferhofer Grapefruit Hefeweizen that all alone will turn you into a regular.
Then there is Hellcat Annie’s Tap Room, a place that straddles all the best of Hell’s Kitchen, past and present, and offers you a chance to cozy up to the season in an environment that captures the essence of your neighborhood at 555TEN, where the beer is as plentiful and varied as the rainbow of falling leaves by the river near these Midtown West luxury apartments.
